What is a hard disk drive (HDD)?

HDDA hard disk drive (HDD), a combination of a hard disk and a hard drive, is a type of non-volatile memory that stores data you save to your computer. This includes software, music, photos, videos and much more.

The higher the storage capacity of your HDD, the more data you can save on your device. The typical desktop computer has 320GB to 1TB of HDD storage.

Hard drives work by spinning the hard disk to find the information you require. Solid state drives (SSDs) are an increasingly popular alternative because their lack of moving parts makes them more efficient.

Problem with your HDD?

Because HDDs are mechanical devices, they are prone to wear and tear, and typically have a lifespan of just five years. Common signs of a damaged HDD include:

  • Slower-than-usual performance
  • Regular freezing or crashing
  • Corrupted files

If your HDD breaks and you do not have a backup, you will lose all the data you have saved. It is therefore extremely important to get technical assistance should you suspect any issues. LetUsFixIT customers can contact our helpdesk 8am–10pm 365 days a year.
